Gnome 2.22 and New Tutorials March 13th, 2008
Just like Ubuntu, GNOME gets a major update every six months. For those who don't know, GNOME is one of the popular desktop environments that come by default with certain Linux distributions, like Ubuntu. This timing allows the new releases of Ubuntu to come packaged with the new release of Gnome. Here are some of the main new features you can expect to see.
Cheese - Cheese is an application designed to allow you to take pictures and record videos using your webcam. Now, as far as I know, Cheese itself isn't anything new, but whats changing is that it will actually be integrated into GNOME this time around. For you Apple fans out there, think of Cheese as a clone of the Photobooth application.
Totem and Evolution Improvements - The video player Totem got a few updates, including the ability to search and play Youtube videos. Totem also got improvements when it comes to playing DVDs and digital television. Evolution, the email client, also got a few updates includeing full support of Google calenders, which users can manipulate through the Evolution interface.
GVFS - GVFS brings a better network transparent vitual filesystem to GTK+. If you feel like reading up more on this try checking out This site
That was just a taste of the wealth of new updates coming with GNOME 2.22. For a full list of changes, Check out http://live.gnome.org/RoadMap.
In news relating to this site I've put up a few tutorials that may come in handy. The first deals with getting Conky up and running on your computer. Conky is an awesome application that can display system monitoring information and other things on your desktoptop. The other tutorial shows the steps needed to convert a video file into a format an iPod can read. Hope you find them useful.
